Facebook starts banning fake news about Coronavirus

When it comes to the virus known worldwide as COVID-19, many misinformations start to appear all the time on social networks. Thinking about the risks that this can take, facebook intends to prohibit this from happening through advertisements and offers from the Marketplace. The main aim is to prevent fake news from causing fear in the population around the current situation.

Facebook in a statement to the “Business Insider” indicated the decision: “We recently implemented a policy to ban ads that refer to the coronavirus and create a sense of urgency, such as suggesting a shortage of a supply or ensuring a cure or prevention.”

How it will be done:

The measure is made through partners who check the facts of the information link that are published regarding the topic. The company intends to remove any false allegations or conspiracy theories that could harm the population. In addition, the platforms will still show relevant information based on the World Health Organization.

Other social networks do the same

In addition to instagram, twitter has adopted a similar practice. When users research the topic within the social network, a link from the Ministry of Health is shown. What is the disease, ways of transmission, symptoms of the virus infection, among other important news, are explained.

Change of plans

The virus epidemic affected the schedule of several companies. Sony, Kojima Productions and Facebook recently announced that they will not participate in “GDC 2020”. The famous game fair takes place between March 16 and 20 in San Francisco, in the United States.

In summary, until Tuesday (25), there were more than 2.700 deaths and 80 thousand new cases of coronavirus around the world, most of them in China. But with regard to Brazil, there was confirmation of the first occurrence in the country. This is the first case of the virus registered in Latin America.
