Instagram adopts measures to decrease fake news about Coronavirus

Instagram announced a series of measures to increase the quality of information and avoid spreading rumors about coronavirus on the social network.

The social network will direct searches about coronavirus for WHO information and made new stickers like 'At home' available.

Any search for the terms “coronavirus” or “COVID-19” will result in an educational message, with connection to information from the World Health Organization (WHO) and local ministries of health.

Instagram told G1, which will also start removing those related to COVID-19 from the recommended profiles section. Some content that deals with the disease will be removed from the “Explore” tab, unless they are from trusted healthcare organizations.

The platform will also reduce the reach of content marked as fake by checking agencies in the feed and stories.

Instagram has banned misleading advertisements for products referring to COVID-19 that attempt to generate panic and urgency, promise to guarantee cures or prevent people from being infected, and has temporarily banned advertisements and branded content that promote certain medical supplies, including face masks.

Among the novelties is the resolution that it will no longer be possible to look for effects of augmented reality related to the disease, except for those that were developed in partnership with a recognized health organization.

In the same report, the social network also said it would make new stickers available, with reminders about washing hands or keeping physical distance. Last weekend, Instagram had already released “Em Casa”, a sticker that added stories from followers who used the resource.

In addition, Instagram will also have a feature that allows people who are in a group conversation to browse the social network “together”. After starting a video conversation, it will be possible to view photos, videos saved.
