Coronavirus changes internet consumption pattern in Brazil

According to a specialist, daily use is similar to that of a Sunday: it grows in the morning, reaches a plateau in the afternoon and peaks at night.

The social isolation caused by the coronavirus increased internet consumption and caused changes in the consumption pattern of the network. Data traffic used in video conferences, streaming services, news and e-commerce sites has risen since the pandemic was declared - mainly in the most affected countries.

Do we have enough internet?

The increase in traffic is still not out of the ordinary. What happened was a change in schedules becoming much like a Sunday's consumption.

For this reason, Anatel recommended that providers increase the capacity provided to users because of the disease, including free access in the data franchise to official information from the Ministry of Health.

In Europe, where the crisis caused by the disease is more accentuated, Exchange Points have increased bandwidth consumption by 10% to 20% in countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom - and up to 40% in Italy, the country with the second largest number of registered cases of the disease.

In European universities, the isolation has made the use of the internet more similar to those of the weekends, when these places have less access.

Network is made to resist changes

Despite the slight increase and changes in the consumption profile, there is no concern about the possible interruption of the service. Although some applications and websites are down or may experience service problems, the core of the internet is more robust.

In an interview with G1, Sirota, from IX.br, said that the internet is a very distributed and resilient network, quite immune to failures. “The internet in Brazil is very robust. We shouldn't have any problems in that sense, ”he says. “We have a lot of installed capacity, the main content providers have a lot of connectivity, and access is a bottleneck.
