Enem surrenders to the Digital Age

2020 will be the first year that the exam will be applied to computers; this year, 100 thousand students will be able to take the exam in the new format.

ENEM Digital is the new modality of the National High School Exam for 2020. In addition to being applied in the printed version, this year, candidates will be able to take the exam on the computer. The rules for the application of the exam were disclosed by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) last Tuesday (31).

In this edition, which will be the pilot model for the new exam format, 100 participants will be able to opt for the digital modality.

Enem Digital is the new method of application of the National High School Exam. The version of the test for computers was announced by the Ministry of Education in 2019 and will be applied for the first time this year, in a pilot model. According to the MEC, the implementation of the new Enem will be progressive, and the expectation is that by 2026 the exam will be 100% online.

100 thousand registrations will be made available to the first participants who choose the digital edition. The structure of the exam will be the same as that of the printed version: candidates must go to the test site to take four objective tests, with 45 questions each, plus the essay. This, however, will be applied on paper. The foreign language test is also maintained at Enem Digital, and the student must choose either English or Spanish at the time of registration.

According to the MEC, the new application method saves money by reducing paper printing and represents a gain for the environment. In 2019 alone, there were more than 10,2 million printed proofs for Enem. The application costs exceeded R $ 500 million.

From a technical point of view, Enem Digital will allow the application of new types of questions. It will be possible to work with videos, infographics and even incorporate the logic of the games to the test.

Registration for the two Enem modalities will be open from May 11 to 22. Candidates can apply to the Participant Page or in the Enem application. Whoever chooses to make Enem 2020 printed will not be able to register for the digital edition. It is worth mentioning that it is not possible to change the chosen mode after the end of the registration.

The amount of the registration fee remains the same as in the 2019 edition: R $ 85. The amount must be paid until May 28, through the Union Collection Guide (GRU) at any bank, lottery or post office. Applications for exemption from payment will be open from April 6. To apply, the student must meet one of the three criteria below:

  • Attend the last series of high school in 2020 at a public school declared to the School Census
  • Have attended all high school in a public school or as a full scholarship holder in the private network, in addition to having income, per person, equal to or less than one and a half minimum wages;
  • Be in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability as a member of a low income family, having to inform the Social Identification Number (NIS), unique and valid, in addition to having family income per person of up to half a minimum wage or monthly family income of up to three wages minimums.
