USP presents cheap respirator to fight Covid-19

Equipment named Inspire was approved in experiments with animals and humans, with a production cost 15 times lower than the most accessible models

With the unprecedented demand for medical equipment caused by Covid-19, importing equipment such as respirators became difficult. An alternative was announced by researchers at the Polytechnic School of the University, Poli-USP, which has been successful in tests on both animals and humans and is close to being released for use in hospitals.

In addition to being national and, therefore, making the international dispute over medical supplies irrelevant, the Inspire emergency ventilator is cheap. According to those responsible, a unit can be assembled in a matter of two hours, with an estimated cost of R $ 1.000. A regular respirator would cost around R $ 15.

Initially, the test was done with animals between April 13th and 14th. The equipment was used on two animals and was successful, which gave researchers the opportunity to test Inspire with humans. This happened between April 17 and 19, with four patients from the Heart Institute of Hospital das Clínicas, USP. Again, there was no occurrence.

Now it will be at Anvisa's discretion to approve or not the equipment for medical use. Documents for approval will be sent to the agency, which will determine their use in hospitals.

An important part of the project is that it was developed with an open license, giving anyone the opportunity to enjoy the design as they prefer, without the need to pay fortunes in royalties, just by obtaining a license from Anvisa to produce it. . This can contribute to accelerate production and its availability in the market to supply the extremely high demand of the moment.
